The Perks of Being A Wallflower by Stephen Chobsky is hands down one of the best books that I have ever read. It’s about a tragically lonely freshman named Charlie who befriends some seniors at his high school. He eventually falls in love with one of them but ultimately begins to understand the meaning of friendship. Charlie also begins to work through some personal issues that present themselves at the end of the book. The great news about this book is that is is going to be made into a movie! And Emma Watson, who plays Hermione Granger in the hugely popular Harry Potter movies, was cast as Sam, one of Charlie’s new friends. The movie looks like it is going to be fantastic and I am really excited about it. Here is a link to some of the cast members of the movie talking about the experience of filming it:

Overall, I really think this is going to be a great movie!!! Check it out when it comes to theatres! But make sure you read the book first! It’s available at the Osterhout Free Library!

Tax time can be a great time of year for some people. A little extra chunk of change straight from Uncle Sam himself can land right in your front pocket. The movie The Help cleaned up at the SAG awards last month. The cast of the film received the group’s top honor, the SAG ensemble award. Viola Davis was named best lead actress and Octavia Spencer was named best supporting actress. The movie is about a group of black maids who decide to tell a white woman what it’s like to work as maids. The movie takes place in the 1960′s. In honor of Black History Month, this week’s Teen Night will watch the movie. Teen night starts at 6:00 p.m. and will likely go until around 8:30. Feel free to come and watch with us. Daniel Radcliff stars in The Woman in Black

Daniel Radcliff practically is Harry Potter, but tomorrow he makes he movie debut without Ron, Hermione and good old Hegwig by his side. The Woman in Black is slated for a theatre release tomorrow. The movie is about a solicitor who is summoned to Alice Drablow’s funeral and house. At the funeral he sees The Woman in Black and is haunted throughout the movie by this mysterious figure. The movie is based on a short story called The Woman in Black: A Ghost Story by Susan Hill. We actually have this title at the Osterhout, but it is checked out. It is due back at the end of Feburary so it may be available then. Overall though, it looks to be a pretty scary movie. It will be interesting to see how Radcliff does, in his first blockbuster since Harry Potter. But if you just love Radfcliff as Harry Potter, be sure to check out our Harry Potter Books and movies!!!!

Switched at Birth

Have you seen the new ABC Family TV show Switched at Birth? It features two teenagers who find out they have been switched at birth. The TV show is very intense and it really keeps the viewers intrigued. It really makes you think about how different your life could have been if you didn’t grow up with the family that you did. Well the Osterhout Free Library has a great non-fiction book about being switched at birth. It’s called Someone Else’s Twin: The True Story of Babies Switched at Birth by Nancy L. Segal. Here is a short summary of what the book is about:
Delia and Begona grew up never knowing the truth about their birth, and their parents had no idea that an error had been made. When one twin was confused for the other by a friend during a chance encounter in a clothing store, the twins finally met at the age of twenty-eight. Once the startling discovery of the twins’ actual identities was made, the families were in shock. The newly reunited sisters experienced mixed emotions and deep confusion, as did their parents, brothers, and sisters. Eventually, the case led to worldwide publicity and a lawsuit that lasted for years.
So come to the library and check out the book!

Meryl Streep at the Library

Magdalen I. Iskra District of the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association donates to the Osterhout Free Library

Officers representing Senior Branch # 172 and the Magdalen I. Iskra District are (L- R): Bernadette Yencha, Martha Iskra, Christopher Kelly, Osterhout Free Library Development Director, Magdalen I. Iskra, and Anna Hudock.

The Magdalen I. Iskra District of the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association recently donated to the Osterhout Free Library in support if its Windows of Opportunity Campaign.

The Windows of Opportunity Campaign was begun in 2009 to showcase the exquisitely restored windows of the Library, which date back 160 years to the original church building, built in 1849. Funds raised from the campaign are added to a Restoration Endowment Fund which will provide funding for future renovations to the Library.

The Magdalen I. Iskra District is a local arm of the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association (FCSLA). With over 86,000 members, the FCSLA is a fraternal benefit society that ranks among the top fraternal societies active in the United States today.
